Notebook Entry, Thursday 31 March 1982

This old man in the pub was talking to Sally, showing her his books on engineering and talking about the changes in Newcastle.

And about his friend, Dan, during the war, whose letter followed him three years around the world:

'Dear George, You'll be unhappy to hear that the Palm Lounge has burned down. This was not the result of enemy action. Yours, Dan.'

Note: The Three Bulls Heads, where this diversion took place, collapsed during renovations the following year and was subsequently rebuilt. Sic transit gloria mundi.
