DROWNING DANTE'S BOOK

Broken Book And Film In Progress

This work comprises performance, film and sculpture.

The performance took place on Saturday 18th June 2005 when I bound a copy of Dante's Divina Commedia with rope, transported it to the end of Five Mile Lane (near Washingborough in Lincolnshire) and drowned it in the South Delph of the river Witham.

After it had soaked in the water I then transported it back home, where I hung it up to dry in the garage.

The process/performance was all filmed by Geoff Matthews, who returned one month later to film the taking down of the book when it had completely dried out.

This particular copy of The Divine Comedy is the subject of 'Book Fire', a poem to be found in my collection, The Ascending Boy. It is hardbound, was published in Italy during the last war, and measures 35 x 26 x 7 cm.

The book now stands as a Broken Book, and the film, which will last approximately 15 minutes, will be available on DVD from Artland Productions.
